Fem un tast de la poesia de W. H. Auden

Aquest setembre, Edicions de 1984 publica un generós volum de poemes de W. H. Auden, traduïts al català per Marcel Riera. El llibre, amb un pròleg d’Àlex Susanna, reuneix més de la meitat de l’obra completa del poeta britànic. Riera el defineix com “un escriptor precoç i brillant” i “el poeta més complet de la literatura anglosaxona del segle XX”. Avui podeu llegir un dels seus millors poemes, “The novelist”.

THE NOVELIST

Encased in talent like a uniform,

The rank of every poet is well known;

They can amaze us like a thunderstorm,

Or die so young, or live for years alone.

They can dash forward like hussars: but he

Must struggle out of his boyish gift and learn

How to be plain and awkward, how to be

One after whom none think it worth to turn.

For, to achieve his lightest wish, he must

Become the whole of boredom, subject to

Vulgar complaints like love, among the Just

Be just, among the Filthy filthy too,

And in his own weak person, if he can,

Dully put up with all the wrongs of Man.

Encabit en el talent com en un uniforme,

amb el rang de cada poeta tothom hi és conforme;

ells ens poden esbalair com un temporal,

o morir molt joves, o viure tots sols fins al final.

Poden anorrear com els hússars, però ell

s’ha d’alliberar del seu do infantil i procurar

ser planer i enrevessat, esdevenir aquell

al qual ningú no creu que valgui la pena tornar.

Perquè, per aconseguir el seu més ínfim desig,

s’ha de convertir en un complet avorriment,

sotmetre’s a planys vulgars com ara l’amor, enmig

dels justos ser just i, entre indecents, també indecent,

i en la seva dèbil persona, si li és donat,

hostatjar sordament tots els mals de la humanitat.
